Next Version of fotoblur
Posted 8/29/2008
Sorry that updates have occured less frequently than I'd like. I was between jobs about 6 weeks ago and went on a large number of interviews. So I started a job about a month ago and its been keeping me busy with some new stuff...but I'm back on track in updating the fotoblur codebase.
So whats in the works? Something that won't interest most people but I've been updating the code to .Net 3.5! I've also rewritten the data access layer and have seen performance issues up to 30-40% in some areas of the code. So if you thought fotoblur was fast before...just wait!
One thing I've also done is look at the statistics from google analytics. I've taken a close look at how you've been using the site. In doing this I'm dropping some functionalities you aren't using in favor of ones you do. This will have 2 effects. One is that I can work faster on the features you do use the most, and two, it reduces the codebase so I can add new features faster.
Just a quick look at whats coming:
1. Front page has been cleaned up some, 'Images Requesting Critique' has changed to 'Recently Submitted' images. Only images with ratings higher than 0 will be presented as 'Hottest' images. Any image with a higher rating than 0 will reside in the 'Hottest' list for at least a week from the time the first vote is cast before eventually dropping off the list.
2. Network and Recommended images were dropped (no one was using them). Don't forget in your weekly newsletter you'll still receive your networks newest images
3. Profile pages are being slightly redesigned to be a more central location for member interactions. For instance, a new section is being added to allow other members to leave public comments right on your profile page. I believe this will allow more community interaction among members. (I guess think Myspace, DA profile pages)
4. Gallery navigation on image pages has been moved to the top of the page (left and right of the image title)...I think you'll like this better!
5. Still debating this (1 image / day)...but someone has mentioned allowing 7 images/week. This is not written in stone yet, so make recommendations. I like the one image per day because someday when fotoblur has a premium account those members can upload 3-4 images per day.
Thanks for any input...I'll let you know beforehand when the update will occur.
Cheers,
Lance
